I am looking for a simple web proxy server that anybody can use. I mean it should be executable and not commandline/service. Something like squid/polipo but with a windows interface. It should also be able to cache and should be free of charge.

But what actually happens when you browse the web? You might be using a proxy server at your office, on a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or you could be one of the more tech-savvy who always use a proxy server of some kind or another.

Modern proxy servers do much more than forwarding web requests, all in the name of data security and network performance. Proxy servers act as a firewall and web filter, provide shared network connections, and cache data to speed up common requests. A good proxy server keeps users and the internal network protected from the bad stuff that lives out in the wild internet. Lastly, proxy servers can provide a high level of privacy.

A proxy server is basically a computer on the internet with its own IP address that your computer knows. When you send a web request, your request goes to the proxy server first. The proxy server then makes your web request on your behalf, collects the response from the web server, and forwards you the web page data so you can see the page in your browser.

Varonis analyzes data from proxy servers to protect you from data breaches and cyber-attacks. The addition of proxy data gives more context to better analyze user behavior trends for abnormalities. You can get an alert on that suspicious activity with actionable intelligence to investigate and deal with the incident.

A proxy server is used for a variety of purposes, including functionality, security, and privacy. With a proxy, you can control the internet usage of employees, save on bandwidth for faster connectivity, load balance between services, and access blocked resources.

Virtual Private Networks (VPN) are a particular implementation of a proxy server. While a standalone proxy handles network traffic, a VPN goes beyond that by additionally encrypting the transmitted data. Read more about Proxy Vs VPN in our sister post.

FreeProxy is a free Development & IT networking system which enables two or more users to share an Internet connection. Originally released as far back as 1999, it is still a viable tool for both business and personal requirements. There are a number of different proxy services available and these are often chosen based upon the operating system as well as the type of desired connection.

FreeProxy can be used as a general communications and data-sharing tool while it also serves as a means to effectively filter specific URLs. Although not necessarily a virtual private network (VPN) server, it can still offer a basic level of protection in the event that a user is concerned about possible data theft. The majority of those who have downloaded this service are individuals although it is not uncommon for small- to medium-sized businesses to employ its network-sharing capabilities.

FreeProxy was voted as being the best proxy server in 2007 by PC magazine and it is estimated that well over 500,000 downloads have already taken place since its release. Some proxy choices include HTTP, SOCKS, FTP, POP3 and SMTP. It is primarily meant to be used with 32-bit versions of Windows; particularly older systems such as Windows XP and Windows Vista. If you are looking for other free alternatives, we recommend you to try JanaServer.

As for what a proxy server is, think of your proxy as a gateway between you and the internet. When you visit a website, the proxy server communicates with it on behalf of your browser. Then, when the website answers, the proxy forwards the data to you.

By default, Windows automatically checks to see if your business, school, or local network already has an automatic proxy server setup ready to run for you. If it does, Windows tells you its name, and encourages you to follow its instructions.

To automatically configure your proxy server settings, select Auto Proxy Discovery. Click on Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS). Type in the proxy server address and its port number in the fields on the right.

If your network requires you to use a proxy server to access the internet, you can enable your WorkSpaces client application to use a proxy for HTTPS (port 443) traffic. The WorkSpaces client applications use the HTTPS port for updates, registration, and authentication.

By default, the 3.0+ Windows clients use the proxy server that's specified in the device operating system settings. The first time the client is launched, the device operating system proxy server setting is used. If you select another option for the proxy server, that setting is used for subsequent launches of the client. If a proxy server is specified at both the operating system level and in the WorkSpaces client, the client setting is used.

In versions 3.0.0 through 3.0.11, if you specify a custom proxy server, a "No network" error might appear when you attempt to log in to your WorkSpace. If you want to use a custom proxy server with the Windows client, we recommend upgrading to the latest version.

There are hardware and software versions. Hardware connections sit between your network and the internet, where they get, send, and forward data from the web. Software proxies are typically hosted by a provider or reside in the cloud. You download and install an application on your computer that facilitates interaction with the proxy.

Often, a software proxy can be obtained for a monthly fee. Sometimes, they are free. The free versions tend to offer users fewer addresses and may only cover a few devices, while the paid proxies can meet the demands of a business with many devices.

To get started with a proxy server, you have to configure it in your computer, device, or network. Each operating system has its own setup procedures, so check the steps required for your computer or network.

With it in place, web requests go to the proxy, which then reaches out and gets what you want from the internet. If the server has encryption capabilities, passwords and other personal data get an extra tier of protection.

A forward proxy sits in front of clients and is used to get data to groups of users within an internal network. When a request is sent, the proxy server examines it to decide whether it should proceed with making a connection.

The server is best suited for users for whom anonymity is an absolute necessity, such as employees who do not want their activity traced back to the organization. On the downside, some of them, particularly the free ones, are decoys set up to trap users in order to access their personal information or data.

Public proxies are best suited for users for whom cost is a major concern and security and speed are not. Although they are free and easily accessible, they are often slow because they get bogged down with free users. When you use a public proxy, you also run an increased risk of having your information accessed by others on the internet.
